Suffering from allergies and just want some relief? Here’s a list of essential oils for allergies to get the natural relief you may be– achoo! –desperate for.

The seasons are changing..green leaves turning to brown, fields of wild flowers blossoming in orange, yellow and red, a chilled breeze rushing through..most of us find this quite lovely. But to some, all this means is dusty air, pollen-infested wind, and hay fever. Achoo! Don’t worry, you don’t have to rely heavily on those allergy drugs anymore! Essential oils are a natural way to get some relief from all those pesky months of seasonal change.

*Remember, if you’re new to essential oils or are using one for the first time, patch test each oil separately before using it to be sure you don’t have an allergic reaction! Patch testing means rubbing a small diluted amount on the inside of your elbow and leaving it there for 24 hours to see if you have any negative reaction to it (rash, itching, burning, etc).

So let’s jump into it! Try these essential oils for allergies.

7 Essential Oils for Allergies

1. Lavender

Beginner and tenured essential oil users alike use lavender for many treatments, but one of the most common uses is it’s calming affect. Lavender has the ability to calm and reduce inflammation. One study even found lavender to prevent allergic inflammation and the enlargement of mucous cells. So take a sniff before you walk outside. Or diffuse this lovely oil daily while the allergies are especially pesky!

Lavender is a great first investment if you’ve never used essential oils before, because of it’s wide variety of everyday uses. You can use it to calm when you’re nervous, to relax when you need to fall asleep, and to settle anxiety or relieve stress.

2. Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus is also used as an anti-inflammatory and can be used to help with congestion. By opening up the lungs, eucalyptus oil can improve circulation and reduce congestion. Take a sniff from the bottle or diffuse into the air for some quick relief. The cooling sensation (like what you might get from smelling something minty) can also help!

Eucalyptus is one of my favorite scents! It’s refreshing, revitalizing, yet calming. I use it as an anxiety-free focus booster when I need to get work done!

3. Blend of Sandalwood, Frankincense, and Ravintsara Oil

This could be the perfect blend of essential oils for allergies! Another study used this blend and found it helped especially well with hay fever. The study participants said they felt improvement with sneezing, runny and itchy nose, and and blocked nasal passages. This could be your key to sleeping better and carrying on with life even when the pollen blows in full force!

How to use these oils:
Instructions:

Drop into diffuser and diffuse into air.

If not helping, you can strengthen the dilution up to 10 (combined) drops of essential oils to 1 teaspoon carrier oil. Only use this strength of dilution short-term for temporary health issues.

4. Chamomile

When it comes to essential oils for allergies, there are a variety of benefits oils can have. Anti-inflammatory is one of the most helpful, because it helps to clear airways and sinuses. Researchers have found that chamomile has anti-inflammatory properties, as well. Many individuals use chamomile to treat inflamed mucous membranes, skin conditions, and symptoms of sinusitis. When diluted and applied topically, it could also relieve swelling and itching from eczema.

Chamomile is one of my favorite herbal teas, because the smell is so calming. Combining chamomile, lavender, and eucalyptus essential oils is a great allergy remedy just before bed when you want to relax and find relief.

5. Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is also known as an anti-inflammatory. Natural shampoos and cleaners use it as a cleaning and calming factor, as well. Tea Tree Oil can destroy pathogens in the air that cause allergies. It also is an antiseptic agent. This could be a good option to use during allergy season.

*However, tea tree oil could trigger allergies in some people, as well. Be sure to patch test this oil (i.e. put some diluted oil on the inside of your elbow and leave it there for 24 hours to see if you react in any way) before you diffuse it, use it topically, or breathe it in from the bottle.

6. Lemon

More and more are using lemon essential oil to clear their sinuses and reduce congestion. Even those without allergies like to use lemon oil for it’s energizing, mood-lifting and alertness boosting qualities! No more fogginess while you’re battling seasonal allergies. Lemon oil also helps with drainage by supporting the lymphatic system.

*Citrus-smelling oils and lemon can make you more sensitive to the sun. Be careful using these on days you are outside and exposed!

7. Peppermint

Peppermint essential oil has inflammation reducing properties, as well. It works to relieve allergies when diffused into the air or rubbed onto your skin.

Peppermint oil smells fantastic and is great for mixing with other oils. One favorite mix of many is peppermint, lavender and lemon. This mixture proves to be soothing, energizing, and great for allergies. Mix these using the dilution recipe above for diffusing or as a topical.

8. Basil

Not only does basil oil reduce inflammation from allergens, but it also supports the adrenal gland and helps to detoxify your body from bacteria and viruses. A double whammy!
